Born in Brikama, The Gambia in 1975, to Alhagie Malamini Jobarteh and Yankoui Kouyate, a younger brother to Tata Dinding Jobarteh. Pa started to play the kora at the age of 6 years, first performing in the UK at WOMAD, Reading and in Buckingham Palace, aged just 12.
